The Days of our Lives – It’s Time to Show Up

“Our lives are but specks of dust falling through the fingers of time. Like sands of the hourglass, so are the days of our lives.” - Socrates

It’s funny, after all these years, it wasn’t until I looked up the latter half of this quote that I even realized it was Socrates, and not the soap opera The Days of Our Lives, who was the originator. It makes sense that the "Father of Western Philosophy", and disruptor of his day, pushes us out of our comfort zone to think about time in a more holistic sense.

The hourglass of time has been portrayed in writing, television, and of course in movies such as The Wizard of Oz. How can anyone forget the fear that ran through us when the witch flipped the hourglass, threatened Dorothy and exclaimed:  “I can’t wait forever to get those shoes”

The cycle of fear in life and business comes at us from many angles:

  • Pain

  • Change

  • Failure, Judgment

  • Loneliness, Rejection

  • Shame, Regret, Uncertainty

  • Inadequacy with our looks, how many friends we have, are we enough?

We can get caught in a loop of fight, flight, freeze or flee as we allow ourselves to be burdened by feelings that steal away our moments of peace and keep us caught in the quicksand of LACK.

  • A lack, or scarcity, mindset alters our thinking that we don’t have enough. It buries us in limitations, competition, and a feeling of unworthiness.

Yes, there is a limit to our time on this planet. It is one of the great unknowns. We are not issued a 'timeframe of completion' at birth. Do we have another hour, or another 100 years?

One thing is certain, however:  We ARE here, right now. And, what we do right now will change us. Every person, place, and experience we encounter will change us too.

So, rather than live in fear, we are given the opportunity to choose what, why, where, when and how we will use our time.

  • As we shift to an abundance mindset, we’re lifted to new realms of possibility and potential. We become filled with energy, creativity, and life itself.

But how do we move to an abundance mindset? A few ways to start:

  • Believe it is possible

  • Acknowledge your feelings

  • Stop the comparison, blame, shame, game

  • See and seek the gratitude in each moment

  • Embrace your own value, and lean into your values

  • Be open to learning new things, meeting people, and beginning right now

Last week, I touched on the subject of “showing up”, in a post, after returning from a visit with family and friends in my hometown. It had been 4 years since I had returned to my stomping grounds at a local pub. I was a different person 4 years ago, and my mindset from then to now has completely shifted. I visited a few friends throughout the day, and into the evening. The smile on my face was genuine and abundant. I am grateful for each and every person who “showed up” for me on my trip home.

And today … I’m extra grateful that I made room and SHOWED UP in my own life too. No longer living in the quicksand of fears, but rather filled instead with the energy and joy of abundance.

In the process of this transformation, I have been surrounded by an incredible community who has collaborated and supported me in my own efforts as a businesswoman, human being, and content creator.
